WELCOME

Ian Wilson Con Brio Music Series Programme Director I am delighted to welcome you to the ninth Con Brio season. We are presenting, as ever, the best Irish and international artists, and are particularly pleased to have performing for us this year French master musician Pascal Rogé and the wonderful Serbian pianist Anika Vavic. We also welcome back perennial favourites the Vogler Quartet – practically our artists in residence by now – as well as Irish wunderkind Finghin Collins, performing with outstanding French cellist Marc Coppey. Irish soprano Mairead Buicke will perform with Korean Baritone Seung-Wook Seong to close the season on a lyrical note and to open we are thrilled to have the Irish Chamber Orchestra, one of Europe’s leading ensembles of its kind, with their first concert for Con Brio. Another leading European ensemble is the Vanbrugh Quartet, appearing in Sligo for the first time in many years with a typically adventurous programme.

The repertoire this season ranges from Vivaldi and Beethoven through masterworks by Chopin and Brahms, to more recent ‘classics’ such as Prokofiev’s 6th Piano Sonata and Steve Reich’s ‘Different Trains’. With the temporary closure of the Model’s Black Box from January 2008, we are locating a number of our events in the Clarion’s Canis Major venue, which we expect to be a very attractive place for excellent music making.

Ultimately, our credo is to present the best music performed by the best musicians, and we trust that we will have your continued support in our attempt to continue to make Sligo one of the premier cities in Ireland for exciting music programming.

DEAR FRIENDS

Luisa McConville, programme manager for Con Brio Music SeriesThis year we will present our ninth annual series to delight lovers of great music, young and old. Sligo is very small as European cities go and it is situated a great distance from Europe’s centres of culture. However, Con Brio has over the years brought to Sligo musicians and music from many centres of musical excellence, including Vienna, Prague, Berlin, Moscow, Paris, London, New York and Oslo just to mention a few. These world class performers – which include many Irish musicians and composers of equally high standing – have all been delighted to come and perform here, despite the challenges of time, cost and distance. They come gladly because they appreciate the welcome they receive from you, our audience, who have consistently expressed your understanding and appreciation of great performances by great musicians.
