The Callino Quartet Con Brio Music Series

Programme:

Haydn Quartet Op.50 No.6 ‘Frog’
Three pieces from Les Vendredis
Siobhan Cleary Carrowkeel
Debussy String Quartet

The Callino Quartet were formed at the West Cork Chamber Music Festival in 1999 and are no strangers to Sligo audiences having played here many times. They cultivate a challenging and eclectic repertoire.

Their programme consists of two quartets from the standard repertoire: Haydn’s gorgeous Frog and Debussy’s one and only string quartet, a work that looks forward in many ways to the musical language that Debussy was to develop as entirely his own. In addition, they will play three short pieces from Les Vendredis (16 works for string quartet) published by Mitrofan Belaiev, lumber millionaire, music publisher, passionate violist as well as organiser of musical evenings in his St. Petersburg mansion where amateur and professional musicians would meet on Fridays ready to perform new and repertoire works for string quartet. Siobhan Cleary’s Carrowkeel was inspired by the spirituality of the Neolithic village near Sligo.
